Many delays and cancellations can be caused engine components and accessories, rather than by the core engine itself. The ETOPs/EROPs programmes have demonstrated that enhanced reliability can be obtained by applying a prescribed modifications and maintenance on engine components and accessories. Such rigorous rules can be applied to all engine components and accessories to achieve high levels of in-flight and despatch reliability, but what are the costs and is it worthwhile?
